The beginner method fills the first two layers in two passes: white corners, then middle edges — one algorithm each, slot by slot. F2L (First Two Layers) merges the passes: each corner travels with its middle edge as a pair, and both drop into place in one short motion. Same four slots, roughly half the moves — and the core of it needs no new algorithms, only new eyes.
What a pair is
On a solved cube, every white corner sits directly under the middle-layer edge that shares its two side colors: the white-red-green corner lives below the red-green edge. Those two pieces are a pair; the spot they fill is a slot. Cross plus four pairs is the entire first two layers.
You have been handling pairs all along. One sexy move, R U R' U', pops the front-right pair out of its slot — corner and edge leave home together and land on top still joined:
Played in reverse, the same motion puts the pair back. Every F2L insert is a version of that reversal.
The four slots: FR, FL, BR, BL
Slots are named by position: front-right, front-left, back-right, back-left. Two rules of grip discipline:
- The cross stays on the bottom. Never tilt the cube to look — read the top layer and the sides.
- Work the active slot at the front-right:
yrotations bring any slot there. Back slots are the same slots with worse visibility, so clear them early or rotate them to the front.
The three states of a pair
Find a white corner on the top layer, then find its edge. You will see one of three states:
- Joined, correctly — side by side, matching colors touching, white facing sideways. Ready to insert as-is.
- Joined, wrong — side by side, but the touching colors clash or white faces up. Pull them apart first — one face turn lifts the corner away — then rejoin.
- Split — corner and edge in different places on top. Steer one next to the other so the matching colors meet: now it is a made pair.
All roads lead to the first state. F2L in one sentence: make the pair, then insert it.
The two basic insertions
A made pair enters its slot through one of the slot’s two faces, and the pair itself tells you which. Read the color on top of the pair: it matches one of the slot’s two centers — the pair goes in through the other face.

U' F' U FOpen, carry, close — three beats either way, and which face opens is the only decision. That is the whole engine. Every awkward position — white on top, corner stuck in a slot, flipped edge — is a short setup that produces a made pair pointing one of these two ways.
An empty slot is workspace
Joining a split pair needs room to move without wrecking what is solved. An empty slot is that room: turns that open an unsolved slot cost nothing, while turns that open a solved one must be paid back. Early in the solve you have workspace everywhere; the last pair is the cramped one — another reason to clear the back slots early.
Intuition covers most pairs you will meet. The awkward minority — corner trapped in a slot, edge flipped in place — fall to the same logic plus a setup move, and speedsolvers have worked out efficient answers for all 41 F2L cases. Learn the logic first; look up the exceptions later.
