4×4: Centers First

No fixed centers on a 4×4 — the corners carry the color scheme, and you rebuild all six centers before anything else.

What you'll learn

A 4×4 is your 3×3 plus two new skills, plus parity you’ll learn to expect. Skill one is centers; skill two, pairing edges, comes next. On a 3×3 the center was the face’s color — fixed, unarguable. On a 4×4 every center is four loose pieces that travel like anything else. Nothing on the cube tells you which face is white — except the corners.

Wide moves

Big-cube algorithms turn layers in groups. Rw turns the outer two right layers together; 3Rw turns three — on a 4×4, everything but the left layer. The number counts layers in from the named face, and plain R is still just the outer layer. Everything else — ', 2, other faces like Uw — works exactly as on the 3×3.

The corners carry the color scheme

A corner’s three colors are molded together: white-red-green stays white-red-green forever, and exactly one corner has that triple. Centers can lie about where a color belongs; corners can’t. Every center you build gets checked against them.

Build order

  1. White first. Collect the four white center pieces into one 2×2 block on any face. Two pieces make a 1×2 bar; build a second bar and join them with a wide turn.
  2. Yellow opposite. Same technique, forced destination: yellow sits directly across from white, always.
  3. Read the sides from a corner. Hold white down. Take any corner with a white sticker and turn the cube until it sits in the bottom front-right with white facing the floor. Its two side stickers name those faces: the white-red-green corner says red front, green right. Opposites fill in the rest — orange back, blue left.
  4. Build the four side centers where the corner said they belong. Bars again: form one, park it with a face turn, form the second, join. When a wide turn borrows a slice from a finished center, give it back with the inverse before touching anything else on that axis. Build two adjacent sides first, so the final pair is adjacent too.

Two shortcuts for the last two centres

The build order above finishes every case on its own — these two only make the two most annoying last-two-centres positions fast. They are optional, and they are not course algorithms.

The last two centers

Rotate the whole cube so the two unfinished centers sit front and top — the four finished ones are now safe on the other faces. The insert is a three-beat rhythm, and this is it:

Rw U Rw' — lift a column of the front centre into the top, turn the top, lower it home. The four finished centres come back untouched.

The middle beat is the one you choose: turn the top to drop the piece you need into that column, or to clear one you don’t. Repeat until both faces are solid.

Practice

Set the trainer to 4×4 and build all six centers, then scramble and do it again — centers are the slowest part of a big-cube solve and the one that repays deliberate practice most.
